NEXT CLUB MEETING

The next meeting of the Optimist Club of Treynor is planned at 7:20 a.m. Saturday morning December 30, 2006 at the Treynor Community Center.  JERRY HEMPEL has arranged for Treynor Varsity Wrestling Coach Gary Schuler to speak.  All members are encouraged to bring a guest.

REPORT OF RECENT CLUB MEETING

At the Club meeting on 12/23 there were 18 members and two guests present.  President GARY GUTTAU opened the meeting with the pledge.  RICHARD VORTMANN offered the devotional prayer.

Kelli Barnett, President of the Optimist Club of Underwood, and Lillie Schneider were welcomed as guests.

The 50/50 was awarded to BOB HIBBARD.  The attendance pot was awarded to JOEL BOHLKEN, but it couldn’t be collected.

Pres. GUTTAU put a couple dollars in the Youth Fund in recognition of his 40th wedding anniversary on the 27th.  BOB HIBBARD added a dollar for his anniversary on the 31st.  LARRY KRAMER was prompted to put a dollar in the fund for his photo in the newspaper of him standing in front of the Can Kennel.

GEORGE SCHNIEDER is recovering from a broken leg resulting from a fall while attending a Treynor basket ball game.

It was a day for auctioning hats.  GARY FUNKHOUSER offered a hat advertising a big wrestling event in Detroit, MI next year sponsored by FORD.  CHAD GUTTAU recognized the cool factor and bid for it.  RICHARD VORTHMANN offered a slightly used hat that was found after a Treynor basketball game.  LES HARVEY recognized it as one of his so it will probably be seen at a game again.

LARRY KRAMER reported the roof for the new Can Kennel was completed.  Additional work is now needed to construct the floor, and install lights, rain gutters, and signage.

The next can and bottle sorting with the Junior Class After-the-Prom committee is this Wednesday, the 27th at 6 p.m.

JOHN KLEIN described preliminary planning for an Arbor Day project next spring.  This could involve tree planting on business property in Treynor instead of on the school grounds.

LARRY KRAMER stated that Treynor welcome sign fund raising is progressing and plans for a community event on February 10 are being developed.  TS Bank has pledged a matching fund of up to $5000 for funds raised for the signs at the February event.

Kelli Barnett commented on the progress of installing highway welcome signs at Underwood.  The main central section for each sign is in place and additional brick work is needed to complete the overall structure.

ENJOYING THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE

Michelle Johnson is halfway through her freshman year at Notre Dame University and has developed a passion for marching band.  As a 2006 Treynor High School graduate, Johnson expressed her satisfaction at having chosen Notre Dame.  She arrived there early to participate in a three day university band preparation exercise and music try out.  Johnson learned new marching styles and became a member of the 380 member university m! arching band.  She joined the forty member trombone section, where half are freshman.  An unusual situation, Johnson noted.  In contrast, Johnson stated, she was one of only 38 members in the Treynor marching band.  It is challenging, Johnson explained, to do the different marching styles, including the low step, high step, and shuffle step, plus field formations while playing an instrument.  Few band members are music majors, Johnson noted, and the band rehearses one and one half hours during the evening four or five days of the week.

The Notre Dame marching band is promoted as the first recorded university band.  It was organized on campus before the football team.  Johnson stated it was quiet a thrill to see about 1000 band alumni members in the football stadium at homecoming.  She is looking to attending the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans next week when Notre Dame plays Louisiana State University.  Johnson is also a member of the Varsity Band which plays at! basketball and hockey games, the Concert Band, and the Trombone Choir.

Johnson stated university course work is challenging, but she felt she was well prepared in high school.  She said she enjoys meeting students from other parts of the world.  Her three room mates in the dormitory are from Maryland, Jamaica, and Dominican Republic.

P.S.  The efficiency expert concluded his lecture with a word of caution.  “You don’t want to try these techniques at home.”

“Why not?” asked someone from the back of the audience.

“I watched my wife’s routine at breakfast for years,” the expert explained.  “She made lots of trips to the refrigerator, stove, table, and cabinets, often carrying just a single item.  “Hun,” I suggested, “Why don’t you try carrying several things at once?”

The voice from the back asked, “Did it save time?”

The expert replied, “Actually, yes.  It used to take her twenty minutes to get breakfast ready.  Now I do it in seven.”
